WWE’s women are really topping the boys these days

Share the joy

Heading into a new week, it’s a chance for WWE weekly TV to swing for the fences yet again, though they’re as likely to strike out these days.

As I was trying to think of a topic for today’s column, I started to focus in on the current feuds and it’s jarring how little heat exists on the men’s side of things compared to the women.

Just at the top level, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch turned their issues back into a bond to both have red-hot problems with Ronda Rousey. But the women are separated by brands, so Nia Jax is in the picture as Rousey’s current foil. Jax managed to go from “next in line” to maybe having the most heel heat in the company by breaking Lynch’s face.

Whether or not you agree with rewarding Jax for injuring a woman who might have been WWE’s hottest star at that moment, she has made the most of the spot and WWE pairing her with Tamina has added an extra layer of menace.

Meanwhile, on Raw there’s a bit of a jumbled up mess. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose got off to a hot start with the initial turn and cooled as Ambrose refused to engage until last week. If the cards are played right, there’s something to this feud, but it has to be more than what it has been.

Braun Strowman vs. The Heels is something, I guess. But as I’ve said before, Strowman turns so often the crowd isn’t totally into the monster as babyface thing and getting the crowd hot for a Baron Corbin match isn’t always an easy thing to do. WWE may have him off TV for a few weeks with the “to undergo surgery” thing floating around.

SmackDown isn’t a ton better for the men right now. Daniel Bryan is still the most amazing performer of his generation, but the title win from AJ Styles was sudden and all focus then went to Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Now they have to build the Bryan/Styles issue back up.

I personally don’t care about Randy Orton unmasking Rey Mysterio because … well, Rey’s face isn’t exactly a hidden secret and Randy Orton is just not my cup o’ tea.

With WWE Evolution outpacing every other WWE show in 2018 and the women having red hot issues on top, it seems the men have a bit of catching up to do.

A new week and another chance to do good.
