Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade
The Kickoff show might feature the match of the night. …So why are they on the Kickoff show, again?
The Road to Fastlane
For a good portion of January, Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade was one of the biggest things going in WWE. The two collided in a tag team match in early January where they were clearly the story of the match. It was then that we got the first taste of the sheer ridiculousness that those two can put together in a ring. They literally cannot have a bad match.
Smartly, WWE capitalized on the buzz and had the two men fight in lengthy singles matches for two weeks straight. Andrade was riding a wave of momentum as the Royal Rumble approached and he even began throwing in some more villainous behavior, including stealing a move or two from Eddie Guerrero’s playbook against Mysterio. They even main evented the show in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match on January 22 and it felt like we were on the cusp of getting something big from this feud.
Unfortunately, since the Royal Rumble, this feud’s lost steam. The initial story coming out of the Rumble was that Andrade wanted to “slay the myth” of Rey Mysterio. And that’s a perfectly fine story! However, the feud was held off television a few times afterwards and then Andrade lost to a debuting Aleister Black. And since that match, Andrade’s been on the losing end of two United States Championship matches. Now? These two are on the preshow.
Couldn’t have said it better myself, Andrade.
What’s at stake?
In theory? The stuff I mentioned before. Andrade needs to slay the lucha legend in order to ascend up the card; that much is apparent to me. And with the Superstar Shakeup around the corner, such a victory would be a great way for Andrade to gain momentum before a roster move. The issue with being put on the preshow, however, makes it seem as if this is a lower card match when it absolutely shouldn’t be. I mean – you’ve seen these two wrestle, right?!
What’s really at stake is their spot on the WrestleMania card. WWE needs to find a compelling way forward with this feud that gives both men a chance to regain some shine.
