As the landscape of the UFC’s lightweight division begins to start taking shape with recent fight announcements, there might be a high-profile trilogy fight coming for the fans. During his Q&A session in Chicago, Conor McGregor spoke about a third fight with his rival, Nate Diaz.

It’s been over two years since Nate Diaz and McGregor fought, with the last fight going the way of McGregor’s by majority decision at UFC 202. Now that Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway are fighting for the interim title at UFC 236 and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Al Iaquinta are scheduled to face each other, the path has been cleared for a trilogy between Diaz and McGregor.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani tweeted out that the booking of Cerrone and Iaquinta could lead to the booking of McGregor vs Diaz 3 and that it is a “developing” situation.

TMZ released footage of McGregor discussing the potential trilogy fight with Diaz, where he credits him as being a true fighter, saying the fight will happen.

“Diaz gave me my rematch and I give him respect for that. He fought me, he beat me, and gave me the rematch at the exact same weight with no hesitation, that’s a true fighter right there. I have nothing but respect, I owe him that rematch, I owe him that trilogy, and the trilogy will happen.”

The rivals split their first two fights, Diaz defeated McGregor by second-round submission at UFC 196, and McGregor picked up a majority decision win in their rematch at UFC 202.

Nate Diaz has not competed since the pairs second encounter in August of 2016. As for Conor McGregor, the Irish star was defeated by current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in his most recent octagon appearance at UFC 229.
