Charles Oliveira wants to stay busy — even if that means competing outside of the Octagon.
Victorious in five UFC bouts over the last 12 months, finishing every single one of his opponents inside two rounds, Oliveira is set to take on Gesias Cavalcante in a 170-pound grappling match at Kasai Super Series in Orlando, Fla., on July 4, the promotion announced following a report by FloGrappling.
Oliveira, 27-8 (with one no-contest) as a mixed martial arts fighter, holds the record for most submission victories in UFC history (13), breaking Royce Gracie’s mark with recent stoppages over Clay Guida, Christos Giagos, Jim Miller and David Teymur.
Since joining the UFC in 2010, Oliveira finished opponents with anaconda chokes (two), rear-naked chokes (four), guillotine chokes (four), triangle choke, armbar, and even a rare calf slicer.
Cavalcante (21-12-1-2), a veteran of the game, hasn’t fought in MMA since April 2018, but recently went the distance with Alireza Noei in a six-minute grappling match in Brazil, losing via decision.
As a MMA fighter, “JZ” holds submission victories over the likes of Rani Yahya, Bart Palaszewski and Andre Dida.
Oliveira’s trainer Jorge Patino “Macaco” is also expected to compete on the card against a yet-to-be-defined opponent, MMA Fighting has learned. “Macaco” fought under MMA rules between 1995 and 2017, compiling a 38-19-2-2 record with notable wins over Ronaldo Souza, Efrain Escudero, Derrick Krantz, Roberto Godoi and Gabriel Vella.
Kasai Super Series takes place at the Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort Hotel in Orlando and also features former UFC fighter Vagner Rocha taking on multiple-time jiu-jitsu champion Celso Venicius.
