It seemed strange that WWE, after spending months establishing a strong feud between Andrade and Rey Mysterio, one that featured many great matches but left room for more, booked the latter in a U.S. championship match against Samoa Joe at WrestleMania 35 on Sun., April 7, 2019, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It’s not that it doesn’t make sense for Rey to challenge for said title — after all, they’ve got a little program they’ve put together as well. It just seemed like Andrade vs. Rey was the natural choice for the big show.
Turns out, it was.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that, actually, WWE was thinking of booking a big conclusion to their feud in the form of a mask vs. hair match. The report notes that “like so many ideas that get started, this just fell by the wayside.”
The reality may simply be that any outcome would be undesirable. Mysterio cannot lose his mask and therefore Andrade would have to lose his hair, and I don’t think anyone really wants to see that, even for the sake of a big angle at a major show.
Still, just imagine what could have been.
