At WWE NXT TakeOver: New York during WrestleMania weekend, Shayna Baszler will defend her title in a Fatal Four-Way match against Bianca Belair, Kairi Sane, and Io Shirai that could be one of the most memorable matches of the year.
There’s no doubt that WWE NXT TakeOver Specials deliver in every way imaginable, and after how amazing last year’s show was during WrestleMania weekend, there should be plenty of hype for what the women and men on the NXT roster can do in 2019.
On the Mar. 13 episode of NXT, Io Shirai and Bianca Belair faced off in a No. 1 Contender’s match for Shayna Baszler’s Women’s Title, and it was a match that promised to tear the roof off the building. For several minutes, Belair and Shirai delivered some amazing wrestling, showcasing their athleticism and selling, with fans unsure who’d win.
But, of course, with Baszler on commentary again, a non-finish was the only likely result. Baszler ran into the ring, ruined the match, and started taking out all her frustrations on former TakeOver: Phoenix opponent Bianca Belair, who would’ve won the title if it weren’t for a referee bump.
Kairi Sane sacrificed herself to save Belair, as Baszler responded to Kairi’s, her long-time rival, intervention by trapping her in the all-too-familiar Kirifuda Clutch. It took Sane’s tag team partner, Shirai, saving Baszler to stop the carnage.
Because of Baszler’s heelish actions, NXT general manager William Regal announced that the “Queen of Spades” will have to defend her championship against all three women – Belair, Shirai, and Sane – at NXT TakeOver: New York on Apr. 5.
This match will be absolutely incredible. We’ve seen Belair, Shirai, Mia Yim, and Lacey Evans kill it in a No. 1 Contender’s match on NXT television before TakeOver: Phoenix, when Belair first earned an opportunity at Baszler’s title. Shirai and Sane, Shirai and Belair, Sane and Baszler, and Baszler and Belair have all shown that they have great chemistry together in either singles matches, tag team matches, or both.
In short, a Fatal Four-Way featuring Baszler, Shirai, and Sane at TakeOver: New York could be a show-stealer and a “Match of the Year” candidate. Baszler’s title defenses keep getting better and better with each match, as she is a master at telling stories in the ring as a heel. Meanwhile, Shirai is arguably the best wrestler in the world, Sane was arguably NXT’s best wrestler last year, and the NXT Universe is more than ready to watch Belair win the Women’s Title after just barely missing out on the gold in Phoenix.
Apr. 5 is shaping up to be Belair’s night, and a TakeOver Special on the Friday night before WrestleMania seems like the perfect venue for Belair to finally dethrone the “Queen of Spades”. Belair is a huge success story for WWE as a homegrown star in the NXT brand, and the fanbase has really taken to her.
Shirai and Sane are also extremely popular babyfaces, but Sane’s already won the NXT Women’s Championship off of Baszler and Shirai’s time can come in the future after recently joining the brand. This is Belair’s time for a championship win, but, regardless what happens, there’s no doubt that this Fatal Four-Way will be incredible.
