Leo Saggioro Is One Of The Best In The World When It Comes To Sweeping Opponents That Are Bigger In Size
Leonardo Saggioro is considered by many to be one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts in the world alive today. What makes Leonardo Saggioro an all time great is the simplicity with which he approaches his jiu jitsu game. Similar in style to Bernardo Faria (whom he trained with for years), Leonardo likes to play a half guard and over under pass style of jiu jitsu. Leo Saggioro is a representative for the Brazilian Top Team in the sport’s international competitive circuit. Saggioro is recognized by many as one of the greatest feather weights of his generation. Butt Kick Entrance into Single Leg
Saggioro starts this technique in half guard by freeing his opponent’s gi from the belt and opening up the lapel before scooping under with arm and adjusting his hips. From here your opponent will instinctively go for a knee cut, framing with his hand on your collar and cutting your arm with his knee in order to stop your hand from getting around his leg. This is where the lapel comes into play. By grabbing the lapel and feeding it through to your other hand behind your opponent’s thigh you set yourself up to control his posture. Notice how active Saggioro is with his foot, setting him self up in the style of an inverted De La Riva. Saggioro grabs his opponent’s collar and with his foot kicks him forward, breaking the posture. This gives Saggioro and opportunity to base with his elbow and get to his knees so he can come up on all fours. Now he will lift the lapel (that he never let go of) under his opponent’s thigh and pull him down with a single leg.
From Over Under To Stack Pass
Because Leo is a light weight he does many things differently from the over under passing position. Typically what happens for Leo when he goes for the over under is that he ends up getting pushed away, causing him to switch to a stack pass. If he can’t get the stack pass, Leo will go back to the other side. No matter what his opponent does, Leo has an answer for it. What is unique about Leo’s game is that he applies pressure passing which is not something you commonly see in the lighter weight classes. This gives Leo the perfect mix of pressure and mobility. Leonardo has passed some of the best lightweight guys guards with these techniques.
Ankle Pick To Double Leg
To hit the ankle pick to double leg from half guard bottom, Leo will first grab his opponent’s gi lapel and bump him so his is deep underneath. He closes his legs in a triangle when his training partner puts his knee on the ground. This is a better position to be in because his training partner is not seated on him, making things a little more comfortable. From here Leo grabs his opponent’s leg and then escapes his legs, moving away from his partner without lifting his body off the mat. He is completely spread out on the ground has he moves around his opponent. Then when Leo is in position he will come up with his legs into the turtle position. Keep in mind Leo maintains his grips the entire time he is doing so. When Leo’s opponent stands up he readjusts his grips around the leg to avoid a back take. Now his opponent pressures down on his head and neck. From here Leo wraps his training partner’s leg. When his opponent tries to sprawl he grabs the other leg and then throws him to the side, moving into side control to finish the technique.
Single Leg Half Guard Lapel Sweep To Back Take
From bottom half guard it is important to remember to defend the under hook and the cross face. Leo grabs his opponent’s belt and keeps his arm tight to prevent the under hook. Then he scoops under his opponent to bring him up and over. He takes the lapel and feeds it through to his other hand. From here Leo closes his half guard and grabs the opposite side lapel. Now he can work his way up to the turtle position. While maintain the lapel grip Leo starts to walk around to his opponent’s back. When his training partner sprawls he traps the foot. It is important to keep the hand away to avoid getting swept. Once Leo locked this position he lets go of the lapel and takes the back, scoring two points.
