Stephan Bonnar has apparently run afoul of the law near Las Vegas.
The UFC Hall of Famer was arrested Sunday on a felony DUI charge after alleged reckless driving on a freeway, the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) confirmed Monday. TMZ was the first to report the news. Bonnar is also being charged with a pair of misdemeanors — resisting a public official and unsafe starting or movement of a stopped vehicle.
Bonnar, 41, was initially held on $22,000 bail. He was released Monday, per court records. This was his third DUI offense, according to the NHP press release. Bonnar is due back in Las Vegas Justice Court on Nov. 26.
On Sunday, multiple calls were made to the NHP’s Southern Command Dispatch Center about a red Cadillac CTS being driven in a “reckless manner” on the I-15 freeway, per the agency’s press release. Callers said the driver was going speeds over 90 mph with unsafe lane changes.
As NHP troopers were responding to the scene, calls came in that citizens had surrounded the vehicle and it had come to a stop. The trooper who first arrived on the scene reported that the driver of the Cadillac — who was later found out to be Bonnar — “had been physically restrained” by fellow motorists “and appeared to be incoherent,” per the NHP release.
Per the release, as the trooper went to apply handcuffs, Bonnar allegedly resisted until the trooper and other citizens were able to apply the cuffs and restrain him.
“The Trooper reported smelling the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver and displaying signs of intoxication,” the NHP release stated. “Medical staff responded to the scene and determined nothing medically was abnormal with the driver.”
Bonnar has not fought in MMA since a one-off fight with Bellator against fellow UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz in 2014. He retired from the sport with a 15-9 record. Bonnar, 41, is best known for his time on The Ultimate Fighter 1 and his finals fight that season with Forrest Griffin — one of the best fights of all time and the one that has been credited for getting mixed martial arts and full-time spot on television.
Bonnar last fought in the UFC in 2012. Most recently, he has been performing in professional wrestling.
