Shawn Spears’ storyline explanation for his chair shot to Cody’s head

While All Elite Wrestling management was in damage control mode regarding the unprotected chair shot he delivered to Cody Rhodes’ head after Rhodes’ match with Darby Allin ended in a time limit draw, Shawn Spears stuck to the story.

Prior to Fyter Fest on Sat., June 29, that story consisted of a scene from The Road to Fyter Fest YouTube series. In episode two, Cody discussed the signing of the former Tye Dillinger and characterized Spears as a “player/coach, eventually a coach” and “a great hand”. Considering the Perfect Ten was unceremoniously eliminated from Double or Nothing’s battle royal, it could have been a straight-forward statement on the role Spears would play in the new company.

This tweet from after the chair shot heard round the wrestling world says otherwise. Cody’s remarks were just the start of the story:

Shawn obviously decided to make a violent statement to his new boss that he plans to be more than a player/coach in AEW.

Will a Rhodes/Spears feud be able to grab headlines the way Saturday night’s chair shot did?
