Sermon on the Mat: Big trouble, big con, big ruckus

Share the joy

Welcome back to the Sermon on the Mat, your weekly one-stop shop for news from the wider world of wrestling beyond the big cable TV monoliths that get all the coverage.

Coming soon…

CMLL Super Viernes (Nov. 2, 10:30PM Eastern)

  1. El Coyote & Grako vs. Oro, Jr. & Super Astro, Jr.
  2. Atomo, El Gallito, & Microman vs. Chamuel, El Perico Zakarias, & Mije

  6. Diamante Azul, LA Park, & Michael Elgin vs. Lucha Brothers (King Phoenix & Penta el Zero M) & Ultimo Guerrero

CMLL are back in the legendary Arena Mexico for your usual Friday night dose of lucha libre action, and it’s the beginning of November, so you know what that means– Dia de Muertos! And they’ve stacked the card as part of the holiday celebrations, with the microstars in action, a couple of dynamite trios matchs, and Sanson defending his title as KING OF THE UNDERWORLD against Templario!

Check it out, as always, free for nothin’ on Marca Claro, folks, and the VOD will go up on CMLL’s YouTube channel (where they also stream shows every Monday and Tuesday free of charge) after the fact for those of you who can’t watch live.

  5. Allysin Kay (c) vs. LuFisto (Shine Championship)

Shine is back in Ybor City, Florida, and at last the Wounded Owl returns to take her rematch for the title she never lost! No word yet on whether Shine will be getting any NXT talent in like Evolve did at Evolve 114 this past weekend, but given the laundry list of talent not currently having a match, including Brandi Lauren, Jordynne Grace, and the Cutie Pie Club, I wouldn’t bet against it.

Black Label are back in Crown Point and holy hell Bryan Alvarez is wrestling for the second time this year! Honestly, folks, this one is such an embarrassment of riches I don’t know where to start– Dasher vs. PCO? Puma vs. Gringo? Allin vs. Parnell? Kat vs. Rae?! There’s so many to choose from!

The Walking Weapon faces the Two Year Vet with the winner going on to defend against Kobe Durst at the big one, plus an elimination tag that fulfills one of Ethan Page’s longtime dreams– to cosplay as the Rock while teaming with D’Lo Brown!

Results

AAW Dia de los Luchadores (Oct. 26)

  1. Curt Stallion & Jake Something over PACO & Steve Manders
  2. Zachary Wentz over El Hijo de LA Park and Stephen Wolf
  3. WRSTLING (Jeff Cobb & Trevor Lee) over DJ Z & Trey Miguel
  4. Josh Briggs over Joe Asa
  5. Josh Briggs over Ace Romero
  6. Bandido & Flamita over Besties in the World (Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett)

  8. Rey Fenix over Sammy Guevara
  9. LA Park over Maxwell Jacob Friedman
  10. Firefox (AR Fox & Myron Reed) over WRSTLING (David Starr & Eddie Kingston) (c) to win the AAW Tag Team Championship

All is not well in the kingdom of WRSTLING, folks. Lee and Cobb were victorious with a bit of help from Starr, but with Trevor showboating and stealing the tag, Jeff is not well pleased, and their loss in the tag title match came down to an errant Backfist to the Future hitting the King of Taunts. LA Park taught MJF to never disrespect lucha libre, and Josh Briggs demanded a real challenge and ended up making an enemy of Jimmy Jacobs, who offered to do for him what he’s done for AAW Heavyweight Champion Brody King.

Check it out when it hits Highspots and Smart Mark Video, folks.

Chikara La Loteria Letal (Oct. 27)

  1. Princess Kimber Lee & the Whisper over Hallowicked & Shazza McKenzie (La Loteria Letal First Round Match)
  2. Cam Zagami & Jimmy Rave over Hype Rockwell & Oleg the Usurper (La Loteria Letal First Round Match)
  3. Rory Gulak & Solo Darling over Ophidian & Travis Huckabee (La Loteria Letal First Round Match)

  9. Dasher Hatfield (c) over Sloan Caprice to retain the interim Chikara Grand Championship
  10. Princess Kimber Lee & the Whisper over Juan Francisco de Coronado & Missile Assault Man (La Loteria Letal Finals)

Yes, folks, the teams were picked, the dust has settled, some could get along better than others, and it’s Kimber Lee and the Whisper that have earned the three points and a tag title shot at the season finale! What’s more, the Whisper has the next shot at Dasher Hatfield’s interim championship, so where Sloan Caprice failed to become Chikara’s first ever double champion, he has a chance to succeed!

Check it out on Chikaratopia, folks.

AAA Heroes Inmortales (Oct. 28)

  1. Faby Apache (c) over Keyra, Scarlett Bordeaux, and Starfire to retain the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship
  2. Poder del Norte (Carta Brava, Jr., Mocho Cota, Jr., & Tito Santana II) over Aerostar, Angelikal, & Drago and Mamba, Maximo, & Pimpinela Escarlata
  3. Rey Escorpion & Texano, Jr. (c) over Bandido & Flamita and DJ Z & Laredo Kid to retain the AAW World Tag Team Championship
  4. Pagano over Averno, Chessman, Espectro, Hijo del Fantasma, Hijo del Vikingo, Kahos, La Parka Negra, Nino Hamburguesa, and Super Fly to win the 2018 Copa Antonio Pena
  5. Psycho Circus (Murder & Psycho Clowns) over Killer Kross & Monster Clown (Domo de la Muerte Match)
  6. Rey Wagner over Jeff Jarrett (Hair vs. Hair Match)

For full details on this one, check out our man Manolo’s excellent recap, but suffice it to say it sounds like the tag titles were as pyrotechnic as you’d hope even with the talent swap due to Andrew Everett’s injury, and hey, who doesn’t want to see Jeff Jarrett shaved bald?

Check the replay out on AAA’s Twitch channel with a subscription, folks.

Evolve 114 (Oct. 28)

  1. PRE-SHOW: Precipice (Chance Auren & Omar Amir) over Mat Rogers & Zenshi
  2. Darby Allin over Josh Briggs to qualify for the WWN Championship Ladder Match
  3. Priscilla Kelly over Jessie Elaban
  4. Adrian Jaoude over Joe Gacy
  5. Leon Ruff over Barrett Brown
  6. Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) over Doom Patrol (Chris Dickinson & Jaka) (c) to win the Evolve Tag Team Championship
  7. Dante Marquis Carter vs. Mikey Spandex goes to a no contest
  8. Adrian Alanis over Dan Matha, Liam Grey, and Shawn Dean (Scramble Match)
  9. Fabian Aichner over Shane Strickland (c) to win the Evolve World Championship
  10. JD Drake over Anthony Henry, AR Fox, Austin Theory, Darby Allin, and Harlem Bravado to win the vacant WWN Championship (Ladder Match)

As always since I have a recap I can point you to I’ll do so and keep it short and sweet here, but suffice it to say… Evolve is NXT?! Three new champions and two of them are under WWE contract, what a world! Not a universally good thing, necessarily, as this represents a full reboot for Evolve in a lot of ways, but very exciting times all the same.

Check the replay out at WWNLive, either as an individual purchase or as part of your Club WWN subscription.

Progress Chapter 77: Pumpkin Spice Progress (Oct. 28)

  5. Paul Robinson over Mark Andrews
  6. Mark Haskins over Chris Brookes and Jimmy Havoc to become #1 contender to the Progress World Championship
  7. WALTER (c) over Zack Sabre, Jr. to retain the Progress World Championship

The march of Progress rolls on, and at Chapter 78 it’ll be Mark Haskins looking to climb the mountain once again, but since the mountain is WALTER this time, well… best of luck? Plus the newly reunited Jinny and Lauren Di Matteo caused a no contest, Tyler Bate had to miss the show due to injury so Thatcher defeated a new-look Pastor William Eaver who’s all about living in the now, and Drew Parker isn’t done with Jimmy Havoc just yet, assaulting him mid-match.

Check the VOD out when it hits Demand Progress, folks.

As always…

Remember folks, no matter what type of wrestling you like, no matter how down you feel about the state of WWE, Impact, ROH, or any other “big-time” pro wrestling, there’s something out there for you. There’s a pro wrestling product that can hit you in the right spot and make you love wrestling like you thought you’d never be able to love it again. It’s there, I promise. You just gotta reach out and find it, and that, my friends, is what the Sermon on the Mat is all about.
