Four division world champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez has injured a meniscus on one of his knees and will not go forward with a planned return on December 8th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
According to ESPN Deportes, promoter Tom Loeffler is looking for a replacement opponent to face Mexico’s Pedro Guevara, and former champion Juan Francisco ‘Gallo’ Estrada has emerged among the list of possibilities.
The fight was scheduled to be the HBO televised co-feature for a card headlined by women’s unified world champion Cecilia Braekhus. And another unified women’s champion Claressa Shields, is opening up the televised portion of the show.
That card is going to be the final HBO boxing card in their 45-year history with the sport. The network made an announcement several months ago of their intention to drop boxing programming from their network.
Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KOs) was in action back in September, when he knocked out Moises Fuentes in brutal fashion. The bout took place on the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to the middleweight rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
It was Gonzalez’s first victory in two years, after suffering back to back defeats to WBC super flyweight world champion Srisaket Sor Rungivisai of Thailand. After getting brutally knocked out in four rounds by the Thai puncher last fall, Gonzalez took off for a long period of time to mentally and physically recover.
He aims to secure a world title shot in the coming year, and WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai, who retained his title on Saturday night over Israel Gonzalez, has emerged as a leading target after a strong offer was already placed on the table for a potential fight in the near future.
