Report: Charlotte’s SmackDown Women’s title win decided ‘last minute’

Share the joy

Were you caught completely off guard by Charlotte Flair challenging for and winning Asuka’s SmackDown Women’s championship last night (Mar. 26)?

There was a good reason for that, according to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer. It wasn’t the plan until earlier in the day on Tuesday:

“This decision was made at the last minute. It was literally made this afternoon or this morning. I heard about it a couple of hours before the show. Not exactly. I wasn’t told what was happening. I was only told things were happening that would effect the [WrestleMania 35] card and obviously those were the matches, the SmackDown Women’s title match is out, it looks like. Well, it is. It is out.”

The reaction from the women who were supposed to wrestle for the right to challenge Asuka at ‘Mania would seem to support this, too. Tweets from Sonya Deville, Mandy Rose and Naomi are all in line with this exchange Carmella had with a follower. That “plans changed” to take last night’s 4Way and a chance at a single match in MetLife Stadium next weekend would explain their surprise and disappointment:

What does this mean for the future of the blue brand’s belt? No word yet, but hopefully they’ll figure that out before the morning of Sun., April 7.
