Hulu Theater, Madison Square Garden – In an absolute shocker, junior welterweight contender Pablo Cesar Cano was too big and too strong for former three division world champion Jorge Linares.
Linares was dropped right at the start. He was then dropped two more times as the round continued. And then battered Linares with punches as the referee stepped in to wave off the fight in the final minute of the action.
Linares, who was a huge favorite coming in, was coming off a knockout loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko from May 2018. He made a decision to move up in weight to pursue a world title at 140-pounds. That may have been a mistake, as Cano seemed to hurt him with every single punch that landed.
Golden Boy Promotions and promoter Eddie Hearn were looking to match the winner of this bout with WBO junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker later on in the year.
