Oscar Valdez, the featherweight champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), has called for more renowned opponents with the desire to unify his crown.
Five defenses of the title are in the books, but beyond the number, for Valdez, is to face opponents of renown, because even though he has asked for them, for different reasons the fights have not materialized.
At the moment, the possibility to face Carl Frampton could be a reality on June 8.
“I’m happy for the fights I’ve had, but I want opponents with big names. I’ve beaten good fighters as a world champion, but they do not have a lot of recognition,” said the Mexican world champion.
Then, he added: “Frampton has already signed with Top Rank, there are no excuses not to make that fight, we share the same promoter, I do not see any problem for us to fight, also there is (Josh) Warrington, champion of the International Boxing Federation.”
When mentioning the name of Warrington, he indicated that also within his objectives in this year is the desire to unify.
“I want opponents like Santa Cruz (WBA super champion), (Ábner) Mares, opponents of that caliber. We want big fights, like (Gary) Russell (WBC champion), but I’m tired of mentioning those names, because the promoters they have do not want the risk facing us, they want to match them with fighters from their own company and they avoid the good fights, and the ones who are most affected is the public, “he remarked.
When asked what position would be located within the loaded featherweight division, Valdez made it clear that he has always been convinced that he is number one.
“I put myself as the number one guy, I will never think that I am number two, I have that mentality to keep winning and keeping myself as the best featherweight today,” Valdez said.
