Five division world champion Floyd Mayweather shocked the world when he revealed that he had signed with Japanese mixed martial arts promotions company RIZIN Fighting Federation to fight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year’s Eve in Saitama.
There are some fight related items to clear up. The undefeated 41-year-old has never fought professionally in mixed martial arts and it has yet to be decided what format and rules the fight would follow.
Mayweather’s last bout was in 2017 when he snapped a two-year retirement to pull off a TKO win in ten rounds over UFC superstar Conor McGregor, running his record to 50-0 and earning close to $300 million for the event.
After he put away McGregor, Mayweather announced his retirement from the sport.
But during the last few months, Mayweather has been dropping numerous hints regarding a potential ring return in boxing and mixed martial arts.
“Everything is about timing, everything takes time and everything is about timing,” Mayweather said.
“Its also all about entertainment. I love to entertain, I like for people to be entertained and who doesn’t want to be entertained.
“It is good to come over to another part of the world, have fun and enjoy each other.”
In Japan, the 20-year-old Nasuwaka is widely regarded as one of the best combat sports prospects in several years.
Mayweather expects a good fight against Nasukawa, who won his last kickboxing bout against compatriot Kyoji Horiguchi at RIZIN.13 in September.
“He is very fast, very young and I am pretty sure he wants to go out and entertain his people,” said Mayweather.
“I am pretty sure the crowd is going to be on his side but I am there for a great cause. It is a special bout.
“Just for me to be in the ring with a young guy that is hungry … It is going to be good, very, very good and I can’t wait.”
