If you’ve stopped BJJ, it’s time to begin again!
Nobody cares why you left. They only care that you come back. Everyone has reasons as to why they can’t train or why they shouldn’t train, and some of those reasons might be totally valid. In the grand scheme of things most people who begin BJJ will not reach black belt. It’s the norm that people eventually drop off the map when it comes to showing up and training.
That said there are plenty of people who still show up to get choked on their own accord. Talk to any black belt about their BJJ journey and most likely it is riddled with issues. Injuries and setbacks are the rule rather than the exception, and the only thing we can for sure say about life is that it isn’t going to go how you planned. The difference between a black belt and a middling white belt is the decision to walk through the door and step onto the mats. This isn’t a Rocky-esque moment where the comeback kid is hoisted up on the team’s shoulders, but instead an intrinsic feeling of it being the right thing to do. It’s easy to quit, but to some nearly impossible to come back.
Most people I have had the pleasure of meeting through my Jiu-Jitsu journey have at least some sort of setback when it comes to training. This seems to also be the rule rather than the exception. Staying away from Jiu-Jitsu can be easy for some. Knowingly and willingly walking into an academy where you will be put into uncomfortable situations can be a hard and bitter pill to swallow for many.

Focusing on why you started Jiu-Jitsu and what you love about it will make it less likely that you’ll step away even in the hardest of times. Sometimes we focus on the hardships that can take place in Jiu-Jitsu instead of day to day progress that is made. Other times it is outside factors that influences us to take time away. For the seasoned vet there is no better therapy than stepping on the mats with people who have a likeminded goal. People lose track of the purpose that brought them to Jiu-Jitsu in the first place. Goals and expectations change over time, but by spending time with the community that many BJJ gyms provide you will reignite your flame to achieve the goals you originally set out to accomplish.
