Lee Selby’s Coach: No Issue Fighting Adrien Broner in The U.S.

As BoxingScene.com reported on Monday night, there are ongoing discussions to make a showdown between former world champions Lee Selby and Adrien Broner.

There is no word as to the weight limit, but Broner is likely not going to fight below the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds – and even making 140 might be a stretch. Broner has not fought at 140 in two years.

Broner was last seen in action back in January, when he was dominated over twelve rounds by Manny Pacquiao.

Selby, 32, was last in action back in February, when he claimed the vacant IBF inter-continental lightweight crown with a points win over Omar Douglas.

That was his first win since losing the IBF world featherweight title to Josh Warrington.

Tony Borg, the trainer for Selby, explained that his boxer would have liked to face Broner as part of a big card being planned for Wembley in September – but Broner’s criminal record will likely preclude him from traveling over to the UK.

Regardless, Selby will not have a problem with facing Broner in the United States.

“If the fight is made then we will be taking it and going out there to win,” said Borg to the South Wales Argus.

“There’s talk of it being the chief support to Chris Eubank Jnr’s next fight, but with what Broner has done outside the ring it might be that he isn’t let into the country. If that is the case then it will probably be in Las Vegas, but Lee doesn’t mind where it is, he’s happy to go to America and fight there.

“Broner has got into a bit of trouble and he’s a proper show off outside the ring – he thinks he’s the next Floyd Mayweather. I was in his company for a week when Gary Buckland fought out in Mexico and Broner was on the same bill, and he was throwing money around and acting like a proper playboy.

“[Broner] started at super featherweight and then moved to lightweight, super lightweight and welterweight, and now he’s come back down again. But I think he’s going to have to work very hard to make the weight.”
