Giles hails from Melbourne, Australia. At a young age he was influenced by martial arts movies. It was under Tyrone’s tutelage that he progressed to purple belt. His club changed coaches and Lachlan progressed to black belt under John Simon. In this video Lachlan Giles explores knee bars from a back step and 50/50. Giles begins with a back step set up. Lachlan states the first step is to sit on your opponent or training partner’s top side leg. Next he swings his legs back so that his leg is behind his opponent’s knee. Did you catch the next important detail? Lachlan likes to take a two on one grip on his opponent’s far side leg. With this grip his training partner’s feet are essentially shackled together. Lachlan likes to secure the end of the foot next to his head like he is answering the telephone. He triangles his legs tight for a clean finish. Next, Lachlan explores a knee bar from 50/50. He starts with a grip similar to an ankle lock grip. The grip is a little bit different because he prefers a hold mid shin. Next he turns his knee down to the mat and post to a reverse ashi. He bridges for a quick tap. Lachlan notes that our weight should be low when we turn for the reverse ashi. If we stand tall we have lost the position.

This video is a wonderful example of Lachlan Giles’s ability to communicate technique to even novice grapplers.  Like all of Giles’ instructional videos, there is a lot of detail. I know that I often gain new insights every time I re-watch one of his videos. Certainly, they have a powerful impact on anyone who makes a careful study of them. Giles’ education, the success of his students and the popularity that he has achieved are testaments to his exceptional abilities as an instructor.
