Last night, the entire foundation of the WWE Fastlane main event was shook to its core and drastically altered.
During Kofi Kingston’s contract signing with WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, Vince McMahon would announce that he was replacing Kofi with someone who he thought was more deserving of a title shot: the returning Kevin Owens. Unlike a similar situation with the Raw Women’s Title picture, we think this change will be permanent.
To paraphrase the above tweet, there is no reason to panic, Kofi fans. In fact, this is more than enough of a reason to rejoice.
Many of us have been championing for Kofi Kingston to receive his WWE Championship shot at WrestleMania next month. The #KofiMania hashtag has been running wild for weeks now. We’ve all had the same goal in mind for the decade long veteran and it looks like we may be getting our wish.
The news comes shortly after rumors spread that Kofi Kingston was getting his WWE Title shot at Fastlane so that Bryan could move on to defend his title against Kevin Owens at Mania. If there was once ever any truth to these rumors, it appears that the roles have been reversed and we will be one step closer to #KofiMania becoming a reality.
As Kofi’s inclusion in last night’s SmackDown main event would suggest, this is not the last time that we will see the New Day member in the main event. Seems as though WWE have come to their senses and decided that rather than trying to get Kofi’s title shot out of the way to progress with their original plans, they will give the fans exactly what they want. Best of all, we are still getting a title match between Kevin Owens and Daniel Bryan a month earlier for Fastlane. Which, given the pairing’s history, the match is sure to be a slobberknocker.
Rest assured, Kofi enthusiasts, we are getting closer and closer to seeing the man hold the WWE Championship high in the air on the WrestleMania stage.
