Reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov said on Monday his potential boxing match with undefeated five division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be twice as interesting as Conor McGregor’s bout with Floyd.

“Our fight will be twice as interesting. Two unbeaten fighters, it will be interesting to see which one falls or takes a step back,” he said in a press conference in Moscow to launch his autobiography.

The Russian widely known as simply “Khabib” called out Mayweather in October but the UFC’s president Dana White has said they could only face off in a mixed martial arts fight and not inside a boxing ring as was the case with McGregor.

Mayweather came out of retirement in August 2017 to stop the Irishman in ten rounds.

Khabib also stated that he would prefer a fight with Mayweather — without giving details of how it might be arranged — over any option offered up by the UFC’s – including the organization’s preferred option of Tony Ferguson.

“For legacy and in the sense of the money aspect, and in a sporting sense, I think the Mayweather fight is much more interesting,” Khabib said. “The athletics commission needs to finish up first and then we’ll talk.”

Khabib is undefeated in 27 UFC bouts including October’s submission of McGregor.

The pair are serving bans from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for their roles in a post-fight brawl between their entourages at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.

NSAC will hold an official disciplinary hearing for Khabib and McGregor on December 10 before they can fight again.

Khabib said that he can imagine a reconciliation with McGregor to end their bitter feud around last month’s title fight.

The two fighters traded verbal blows before the Oct. 6 fight and Khabib sparked a brawl with McGregor’s team after winning by submission.

“Everything is possible. Just as McGregor and I feuded, so we could reconcile,” Khabib said. “Who are we not to forgive one another when the Almighty forgives us?”
