World Championships bronze medallist Amiran Papinashvili (GEO) won his third Grand Slam title as he lit up the men’s lightest weight category. World Judo Masters silver medallist Francisco Garrigos (ESP), whose sole Grand Slam triumph come in Abu Dhabi in 2016, was thrown with a koshi-guruma for ippon after 20 seconds of golden score as Papinashvili stole the show on day one.

In the first semi-final Paris Grand Slam silver medallist Sharafuddin Lutfillaev (UZB) was turned over by Papinashvili with beautiful te-waza for ippon as the Georgian marched on to the final. In the second semi-final Garrigos downed Agadir Grand Prix winner Gusman Kyrgyzbayev (KAZ) after two and a half minutes of golden score by ippon from a gigantic hip throw.

The first bronze medal was won by Kyrgyzbayev who rolled over former Cancun Grand Prix bronze medallist Jorre Verstraeten (BEL) with a soft counter to a seoi-nage for a waza-ari score in golden score. The Kazakh opened his Grand Slam medal account after 25 seconds of added time to ensure this his country won exactly 25% of the -60kg medals available on day one.

The second bronze medal went to Lutfillaev who conquered former world champion Yeldos Smetov (KAZ) in golden score. Lutfillaev won the contest after three and a half minutes of added time when Smetov was penalised with a shido for a false attack.

For most judo fans the World Championships go as they are planned to go. The category for men U60kg delivered some of the major favourites in the semi finals. The two Japanese both survived the shift and Naohisa Takato is still on track to prolong his world title. Read more

Only two times the World Championships had more fighters U60kg then this edition. In a field of 68, only the 2010 Tokyo and 2011 Paris edition had such an amount of class players. The quality is awesome but we’re also missing some guys here. Read more

The men’s U60kg category is somewhat devaluated without a lot of tough guys. Like Smetov, Urozboev and some more talents. The 68 athletes will for sure make a party tough, but one side is more Asian oriented, the other more Eastern European. Read more

Georgia is a powerful judo nation, but only for men. For a long time, it had no female players in its World Championships team. Its first female representative, Esther Stam, was not even from Georgia but was an import from the Netherlands when she switched in 2014. Read more
