Jorge Masvidal thinks Ben Askren clash at UFC 239 will end ‘painfully and brutally’

Jorge Masvidal has walked the walk for a long time and now he’s doing a little talking ahead of his UFC 239 clash with Ben Askren.

At Wednesday’s open workouts in Las Vegas, “Gamebred” used his time to answer questions from his fans, most of whom were interested in exactly what level of violence Masvidal was going to inflict on his rival this Saturday. He declined to predict a specific finish (though he mentioned that going to the third around would allow him to “punish” Askren), but did describe what he expected the overall tone of the fight to be.

“We’re gonna do it painfully and brutally,” Masvidal said. “That’s for sure. I don’t like this dude as everybody here knows, so it’s gonna be brutal. It’s gonna be painful. I don’t know what round, but it’s gonna be painful.”

Masvidal, a veteran of 46 pro bouts in addition to who knows how many undocumented scraps, is coming off of a thrilling knockout of Darren Till this past March, a win that vaulted him right into the thick of the welterweight contenders’ circle.

Asked if expects the Askren fight to go down the same way, he said the aftermath could be even worse this time around.

“This is different,” Masvidal said. “Darren Till woke up eventually, I don’t know if brother’s going to wake up.”

The last three times that Masvidal has seen his hand raised, it was due to strikes. That includes wins over Till, Donald Cerrone, and Jake Ellenberger. Though he’s known for exciting fights that go the distance, 14 of Masvidal’s 33 wins have come by way of KO/TKO.

Masvidal has experienced a resurgence of popularity not just due to those finishes, but also because of his backstage dust-up with Leon Edwards in London after the Till win. The 34-year-old said he had to give Edwards “the three-piece with the soda,” a phrase that quickly went viral.

When a fan prompted him to utter his now famous catchphrase at Wednesday’s workouts, Masvidal said that he’ll let Askren decide what he wants to order when they meet at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday.

“I’m gonna give him options,” Masvidal said. “We got all the way from the three-piece and the soda to the family pack with a two-liter soda, he can pick out what he wants.”
