Hearn Hopes That DAZN as Middleman Can Make Wilder-Joshua

Eddie Hearn, promoter for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, believes there is a new avenue to finalize a potential unification with WBC world champion Deontay Wilder.

It’s been no secret that Wilder is being courted by streaming service DAZN, who have an exclusive content deal with Hearn.

Wilder currently competes under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.

There is reportedly going to be a meeting between Wilder and DAZN executives, who are hoping to persuade him to sign with their brand.

Wilder has been ordered by the WBC to make a mandatory defense against Dominic Breazeale.

Joshua is back on June 1, when he defends his titles against unbeaten challenger Jarrell Miller at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Should both win, Hearn is hoping DAZN can make the rematch happen – with company executive John Skipper being the middleman.

“It’s very encouraging,” Hearn said to Sky Sports. “I’m not going to say too much on it, because I don’t want to jinx anything. But I think there’s an opportunity there for someone to be a mediator to get the fight done.

“Clearly, the relationship between Team Wilder and Team Joshua is not the best. I think this is a route that is going to be very beneficial to the making of that undisputed fight. It’s not just about doing a deal with Wilder, it’s about doing a deal with Joshua.

“They’ve got their work cut out, but the pieces are coming together. There’s a long way to go but we’ll see where it goes. Now I think there’s a strategy in place that could lead us to this fight. There’s a clear desire from both sides to make the fight (happen). Wilder’s going to fight Breazeale, that’s his mandatory. Joshua fights Miller. If an undisputed fight gets made it will be November or December 2019. But still a couple of hurdles”

Skipper, however, would not reveal anything regarding Wilder talks.

“I will not characterize them all, or even confirm them. We have discussions with people and until we announce I rarely comment on them until we announce, so I don’t have anything to announce so no comment. Other than we’re interested in having the best fights on DAZN and we will put the fights on that people want to see. It’s pretty clear that one fight people want to see is Joshua and Wilder,” Skipper said.
