Gordon Ryan Does It! Doube Gold At IBJJF No Gi Worlds!

It’s one thing for a man to say he’s going to do something epic, but when he actually does it, and in convincing fashion, it’s hard to doubt their commitment, will and determination to WIN.

This perfectly describes Gordon Ryan’s double gold win at IBJJF No Gi Worlds 2-2018

Despite fighting a neck injury, Gordon Ryan used to his guard to frustrate, attack and submit 4 out of 8 of opponents. Some of his opponents… like Cyborg even seemed scared to engage Gordon Ryan, and even used “Combat Jiu Jitsu” rules to try and beat Ryan.

Note – if you haven’t seen Cyborg swinging for Ryan’s head and earning himself a DQ, then you’re missing out… Here’s a quick recap.

Gordon Ryan pulled guard, this is mostly due to his neck injury. Cyborg basically looked like he didn’t want to fight Gordon, and a good portion of the mat was Ryan butt scooting the chase down Cyborg. Eventually this earned Cyborg 3 penalties which gave Gordon Ryan 2 points.

In the last few minutes of the match, you saw Cyborg get more and more frustrated with Gordon… and then the Combat Jiu Jitsu match started 🙂 At first Cyborg was “kinda” going for a collar tie on the head, kinda slapping Ryan. But this escalated and Cyborg’s final penalty and DQ came from a legit palm strike to Gordon Ryan.

We can only imagine that there was some emotions coming into this match, especially since Gordon likes to use Instagram to basically mess with every top Jiu Jitsu fighter in the world… including Cyborg.

Cyborg would definitely be considered one of the “old school” grapplers who believes that Ryan should show more respect, and maybe Cyborg was trying to teach his a lesson. Regardless, it was an … interesting match that will go down in the record books.

Gordon Ryan, as always, gives credit to his teacher and mentor John Danaher. It’s without a doubt that Danaher was a major factor in Gordon Ryan’s Double Gold win. The grappling system… or should we say the multiple systems that Danaher taught Ryan… such as the back attack system, the leg lock system and the front headlock system were a huge part in Gordon’s wins.

Another factor was Gordon’s dedication to training and being as prepared as possible. This included his diet, workouts, and strict training / recovery regimen.

Not everyone can be the KING like Gordon Ryan, but he does show us how the world of Jiu Jitsu is evolving… constantly evolving, and Gordon Ryan is a great representative of the new breed of grapplers that is being produced now-a-days. Their old school BJJ is solid, their wrestling game is solid, and their leg lock game is solid. They know how to combine everything together, especially with the mentorship coming from John and the whole team at Renzos / Danaher Death Squad.

Even though it maybe a “bit” difficult for you to become the next Gordon Ryan… but that does NOT mean that you shouldn’t try. We all should be consistently looking to improve our Jiu Jitsu and have a better understanding of what our bodies can do WITH Jiu Jitsu / Grappling.

One of the best ways to increase your grappling knowledge…besides actually training on the mat, is studying. If you actually approach your jiu jitsu development as an education. Then there is homework that you should be doing. Your homework should focus on a subject… like leg locks. For example, if / when you get John Danaher’s Entering The System of Leg Locks, you don’t just watch the whole DVD set and put it away. You study it like you would for a class. You don’t read a book for school, and then suddenly know it. You need to review challenging concepts, you need to take quizes and tests to see how you are progressing, and you constantly need to be evaluating where you are facing difficulties and work on those weaknesses.

This is how Gordon Ryan approaches his Jiu Jitsu training. Study, train, test, refine, study, ask questions, etc. Learning Jiu Jitsu is a process that goes beyond just “rolling”.

One of our best products is the John Danaher Leg Lock DVD set. It is one of the most comprehensive systems on learning how to attack the legs, but also a great insight into grappling from arguably the most intelligent grappling coach out there: John Danaher. Grab his DVD set now, then study it, train it, and make it a part of your game.
