Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach was furious upon hearing the news that unbeaten heavyweight contender Jarrell Miller had failed a pre-fight drug test ahead of his scheduled title fight with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO champion Anthony Joshua.

The finding caused Miller to lose out on a $6 million payday with Joshua, which was scheduled for June 1 in New York.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Joshua, said he had been informed of Miller’s positive test by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

On Wednesday, the New York State Athletic Commission denied Miller’s application for a license in the state – which officially ruled him out from the fight.

Miller’s camp have requested a B sample be tested, the BBC reported, and if that sample comes back negative – which is very rare – Miller can apply for a license again.

Miller tested positive for the banned substance GW1516, which boosts endurance and helps athletes burn fat.

In February, Miller accused Joshua of using Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) to take testosterone that helped him build muscle, a charge that Joshua’s camp denied.

Roach believes the ongoing problem of boxers using performance enhancing drugs could be easily solved if a lifetime ban was put in place – even for first time offenders.

He strongly feels the likely outcome of PED abuser being banned for a few months to a whole year is not strong enough.

“You know the fine isn’t strong enough. Let’s face it, they’ll chance doing drugs because the fine is so light. Make a fine that you’re banned for life and nobody will do drugs,” Roach explained to

“Nobody will chance doing drugs and getting caught and being banned for life. The fine isn’t strong enough. We have to really, really buckle down. I mean it’s attempted murder almost, this is a combat sport. When you are doing drugs to enhance what you have it’s really dangerous.

“I mean, it shouldn’t happen in this world but that’s the world we live in right now. Eliminate it all.. with the first time [you get caught] you’re banned for life.”
