While Frank Mir’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career hasn’t been going all the well as of late, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion will look to pick up a win in the grappling arena.
Mir has been booked to face off against Satoshi Ishii at the upcoming Quintet 3 grappling event in a special singles match on October 5, 2018 inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Known as one of the best grapplers in all of MMA, Mir has submitted some of the best to ever compete in the sport, including snapping Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria’s arm in two, Brock Lesnar and Tim Sylvia.
His MMA career has kind hit a bit of a snag, dropping his last three fights including getting knocked out by Fedor Emeliananeko in the opening round of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix (see it).
As for Ishii, the former judo Olympic gold medalist never really made the big splash many expected from him in MMA, but he does have some skills when it comes to jiu-jitsu. Plus, once he grabs a hold of you, Ishii goes to his bread and butter and whips out all his judo tricks to get his foe to the ground, which will be instrumental in his match against Mir.
Quintet 3 is a team vs team event, in which members of different squads face off against one another until there is one last man standing. Still, it is one-on-one, not a free for all event.
The upcoming event will be headlined by Team Sakuraba and Team Alpha Male, which will be led by Kazushi Sakuraba and Uriah Faber, respectively. The two other teams competing will be Team 10th Planet and Team Polaris.
