Former unified junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara is planning to return to the ring on August 31.

And he says the opponent is slated to be the brother of unified middleweight king, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Lara is not exactly sure which of Canelo’s brothers is slated to be the opponent – but Ricardo Alvarez has been inactive since September 2014 and Rigoberto Alvarez has long been retired, so that only leaves junior middleweight Ramon Alvarez.

Lara (25-3-3, 14 KOs)  was in action in March, when he fought to ao twelve round split draw with WBA “Regular” champion Brian Castano.

Alvarez, who was stopped by Brandon Rios last November, bounced back in April with a decision over Jose Carlos Paz.

Lara lost a razor close split decision to younger brother Canelo back in 2014.

“I’m supposedly fighting on August 31 against Canelo’s brother,” Lara said to George Ebro. “I do not know what his name is, but I know he’s an Alvarez. So we will soon started the training for that fight.”

Lara appears to be taking a break with Ramón Alvarez (28-7-3, 16 KO), after tough back to back fights against Castano and Jarrett Hurd in April 2018.

He still hopes to get a rematch with Canelo.

“[This next fight] means a lot, because that way maybe the rematch is coming, God willing,” added Lara.

Lara fights exclusively under the Premier Boxing Champions banner. PBC has content deals with Showtime and Fox Sports. And Canelo is contractually tied to streaming service DAZN.
