Another star wrestler is set to step into the Octagon.
After signing with the UFC last December, three-time NCAA All-American Deron Winn will make his debut for the promotion in a middleweight bout against Markus Perez (11-2) at an upcoming UFC on ESPN+ card on June 22 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz confirmed the matchup with sources following a report by Combate.
Winn, 29, is 5-0 since beginning his pro MMA career in March 2017. He has competed for Bellator and Legacy Fighting Alliance. His most recent outing saw him defeat UFC veteran Tom Lawlor by unanimous decision at Golden Boy MMA: Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 last November. Prior to that bout, Winn had finished all four of his opponents in the first round.
He is a longtime associate of UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and is currently being coached by UFC veteran Kevin Jackson.
In four UFC appearances, Perez has alternated wins and losses. His pro victories include wins over Anthony Hernandez, James Bochnovic, Ian Heinisch, and Paulo Thiago. This will be Perez’s second appearance in 2019 after he defeated Hernandez by second-round submission at UFC Fortaleza in February.
