Monday, we passed along word Nikki and Brie Bella were hanging up their wrestling boots. In a pair of announcements which aired during the fourth season of their E! reality show Total Bellas, the twins called it a career, and we offered a well earned tip of our cap.
Shortly after the episode where Nikki said her body could no longer handle the rigors of a WWE schedule, the Bellas announced on Twitter they were starting a podcast. The first episode of that dropped today (Mar. 27) and… guess who says the could be enticed back into the ring?
To be fair, both women explain their decision to step away from the ring, and their issues are legit. Both are feeling the effects of age, with Nikki in particular saying her last run was made under constant health concerns after her spinal fusion, and Brie & Daniel Bryan are trying to have a second child.
However, nothing they say on the podcast sounds as concrete as “in-ring retirement”.
And their answer to a fan question about the WWE Women’s Tag titles?
Brie: Nicole and I did tell everyone, yes, that we are stepping away from the ring – which is true, we are. But we also did say that before the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles came into place. And this is the thing, guys – for years my sister and I were begging for the Women’s Tag Team titles. Begging. We actually never thought that could truly be a reality. The fact that it is now, makes it extremely tempting for us to go back and fight for them because we’re really the longest reigning, most authentic tag team.
Nikki: We were born a tag team. We entered the WWE as a tag team, we even – if you go back, FC-Dub (Florida Championship Wrestling, then a WWE developmental territory) as a tag team… overall we are a legitimate, the only real, true blood tag team… And I have to say, having an amazing almost 13 year career at WWE, I would love to win tag titles with you, Brie… If Brie could put baby #2 on damn hold, I would step back into that ring with my sister by my side…
Brie: My pregnancy test did say negative this morning.
Nikki: … with Sasha and Bayley, whoever wins at WrestleMania, I will take them on. I would love to take them on and try to get those tag team titles.
Brie: So what we’re saying is never say never and, yes, once again, Brie could come out of retirement and then retire. Third time’s the charm, right?
Nikki: Third time’s the charm, Brie.
You can argue all day long about whether or not you think the Bellas were good wrestlers. But with self-promotion skills that would make P.T. Barnum proud, they definitely picked the right business.
Who’s ready for the comeback? And how soon do you think it happens?
