With Leigh Wood winning the Commonwealth belt at the beginning of the month, the Nottingham puncher ensured it was a brilliant night for Dave Coldwell as he’s the recipient of the Sheffield man’s managerial wisdom.
With Jordan Gill, trained by Coldwell, perhaps stealing the headlines, the Rotherham based trainer is eager to point out the excellent showing by Wood who defeated Abraham Bonsu in two rounds.
“It was the win he needed at this stage of his career,” buzzed Coldwell when reflecting on the Peterborough show just a few weeks ago.
“Leigh was someone who had something of a reputation on the way up and a lot was expected of him. It hasn’t happened for him yet, but I’m confident that the most recent win and him becoming Commonwealth champion can give him another boost. He’s a quality fighter with brilliant power and I think there’s a lot more to come from him over the next year.”
Coldwell added, “The plan now is to keep him active and exploit the brilliant win he had at the start of the month. He wants to be busy and I want him in proper fights because I believe he has a lot to offer. It’s getting quite interesting at featherweight now and it’s something of a stacked division where an opportunity might just be around the corner. Leigh needs to be ready for that chance and I think you’ll see that when he continues to step up in class. He’s got a belt to defend now, but he should be aiming his focus higher on more titles.”
