Ever since Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor by submission in the UFC 229 main event, he’s been linked to a potential boxing match with undefeated legend of pugilism Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Nurmagomedov initiated this talk by calling Mayweather out, but Mayweather quickly dumped gas on the fire, assuring that the boxing match will actually happen.
“Oh, we’re fighting,” Mayweather recently told TMZ Sports. “I’m my own boss. I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end, but on my end, we can make it happen.
“… When I face Khabib, I’m getting a nine-figure payday. It’s more than the McGregor fight – probably $100 million more, guaranteed. It could be somewhere between $110 [million] and $200 million guaranteed.”
According to UFC President Dana White, however, it’s time to let go of this talk. He says Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be boxing Floyd Mayweather.
That said, he says Mayweather is welcome to come fight in the UFC if he so chooses. The door is open.
“If Mayweather wants to fight, come fight,” Dana said in a recent interview with TMZ. “Come fight in the UFC. We’re not boxing again. We did that once [with Conor McGregor], that’s over. You want to fight, come fight.”
“You want to fight, come fight,” he repeated. “A real fight.”
White also added that, even if he was interested in letting Khabib Nurmagomedov box Floyd Mayweather, Nurmagomedov would first have to face the music with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
“He and Conor both have to go before the Nevada Athletic Commission,” he said. “I think that’s scheduled for December. We’ll see what happens.”
While Dana White assured Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be boxing Floyd Mayweather, he did once again claim that the UFC will soon be getting into the boxing industry.
“We’re getting into boxing, 100%,” he said. “For sure. I’m not diving in head first, I’m dipping my toe in.”
How do you think Floyd Mayweather will respond to these comments from Dana White?
