Crazy Omoplata Variation by Thamires Aquino
If you have not heard of Thamires Aquino, she is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Master Júlio César Pereira and one of the top female competitors of her generation. Aquino’s list of accolades is long, including CBJJ Brazilian National Champion in 2017, CBJJ South American Champion in 2016, IBJJF Rio Fall International Open Champion in 2017, UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour – Rio Champion in 2016, UAEJJF Bento Gonçalves Int. Pro Champion in 2017, IBJJF World Championship 3rd Place (2018/2017) and more. Today Thamires Aquino is here training with 5 time world Champion Bernarda Faria at his Academy in Boston, Massachusetts.
Bernardo Faria has some sick omoplatas too. His tips unlock the secrets of not only securing the omoplata position, but finishing the submission too – which can is the REAL challenge.
Aquino is going to demonstrate a crazy variation on the omoplata, one that she has used to much success in competition. Watch the video below and then we will break down the technique. Check it out now!
Aquino starts the technique from spider guard. Thamires controls the lapel as opposed to controlling the under arm. She pulls Bernardo over her, forcing him to post with his hand on the mat. When Faria has posted Aquino wraps her leg around the arm going into the omoplata position, but only going about half way. From here she passes her leg over Bernardo’s head. Now here is a very important detail, instead of placing her foot in Bernardo’s bicep, Thamires places her foot on his forearm. This opens up enough space for Aquino to place her other foot on Bernardo’s bicep. Thamires keeps turning her body until she can reach over Faria’s back and grab his arm. She pulls back with her foot hook, her hands grabbing the gi, and the submission is right there.
Talk about a unique approach to the omoplata! There is a reason a video of Thamires using this crazy omoplata variation in competition went viral. This is a great example of how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is always evolving, as players adapt styles that fit their capabilities. Thank you for sharing this technique with us Thamires!
