One of the scenarios that, perhaps, few contemplated was a potential showdown between Mexican countrymen Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Jaime Munguia – considering the amount of options that the two boxers had between them.

It seems that the possibility is not only serious but there is some progress in the negotiations for a clash between the two Mexican champions on September 14.

Renowned Mexican promoter Fernando Beltrán revealed to ESPN Deportes that he received an offer to make Munguía the next opponent for Canelo, which the team and the boxer analyze, with the clear interest that the fight be held.

Munguia, who holds the WBO junior middleweight title, would have to move up to 160-pounds to challenge Canelo for his WBA, WBC, IBF middleweight belts.

Win or lose, Munguia would retain his WBO crown.

Munguai is co-promoted by Beltran and Golden Boy Promotions. And Golden Boy also handles Canelo.

“This morning I spoke with [Golden Boy CEO] Oscar [De La Hoya] and he asked me if there was interest in the fight between Jaime and Canelo,” Beltran told ESPN Deportes.

“I told him that our interest is very high and then he sent me an offer that we are reviewing. It would be sensational for Mexico if two of its champions face off and put our boxing on top.”

On the one hand, until yesterday, Munguía had offers on the table to fight with Jessie Vargas, Patrick Teixeira or Dennis Hogan, but, the possibility of facing someone like Canelo has grabbed his attention and he showed his optimism so that the contest between the two can happen in just over two months.

On the other hand, Canelo’s team has been negotiated with Sergey Kovalev, whose promoter, Kathy Duva, has revealed that he is not satisfied with the offer they have put on the table.

Details about Golden Boy’s offer to Munguia were not disclosed – nor has there been talk of a possible venue, but Las Vegas could be the ideal site.
