Bernardo Faria began training BJJ in in Juez de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil in 2001 at the age of 14. There, he trained under Ricardo Marquez. Two years later, he tried out for his first major competition, the World Cup (CBJJO). He lost, but came back strong the following year, winning silver in his weight class and bronze in the open weight division. Faria earned his blue belt that same year, and with each new belt, he earned significant titles and achievements. As a blue belt he earned two silver medals at the Mundial World Championships. As a purple belt, in 2006, he became the Brazilian National Cup Champion and a Word Champion in the Absolute Division, among countless other titles and awards. As a brown belt, which he was awarded in 2007, he reached second place in his division at the World Championship.
In 2008, he received his black belt from Ricardo Marquez. Faria then decided to move to Sao Paulo to join Fabio Gurgel and his Alliance team. After many years of training there and acquiring many more titles, Faria moved once again in 2013, this time to NYC, to train and teach at Marcelo Garcia Academy. In 2015 Faria won the IBJJF World Championship Open class title and his division, winning the double Gold and becoming the 1st in the IBJJF Ranking. He was also chosen as the best athlete of 2015, then in 2016, he broke the record of Open Class Champions of the Pan-Ams, submitting all of his opponents and winning his third Pan-Ams Open Class title.
