FRISCO, Texas – Bakhram Murtazaliev needed nearly nine full rounds, but eventually he did what was expected Saturday night against aged veteran Elvin Ayala.

The Russian junior middleweight prospect dropped Ayala in the ninth round and stopped him soon thereafter on the Eleider Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev undercard at the Dallas Cowboys’ training facility. Their scheduled 10-rounder was stopped at 2:05 of the ninth round, with Ayala absorbing more punishment while backed against the ropes.

The 26-year-old Murtazaliev (15-0, 12 KOs) hurt Ayala with a right hand around the halfway point of the ninth round at Ford Center at The Star. Ayala (29-13-1, 13 KOs) moved backward and Murtazaliev followed up with a right-left-right comination that dumped Ayala on his back.

Ayala got up, but he didn’t last much longer in the first fight on a nine-bout card. The 38-year-old fighter from New Haven, Connecticut, lost by knockout or technical knockout for the fifth time in a pro career that began in September 2003.

Immediately after Murtazaliev’s victory, Patrick Day out-worked Ismael Iliev and won a unanimous decision in a 10-round junior middleweight match. The 26-year-old Day (17-2-1, 6 KOs), of Freeport, New York, defeated Russia’s Iliev (11-1-1, 3 KOs) in largely uneventful fight by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94.
