Former two division champion Devon Alexander was ringside on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, as he watched IBF world champion Errol Spence retain his welterweight crown with a twelve round domination of Mikey Garcia.

Garcia, who holds the WBC world title at 135-pounds, was moving up by two weight divisions to take the fight with Spence.

Spence felt Garcia out in the first few rounds, but then appeared to take over the entire fight by the fourth round.

After the tenth round, Garcia’s corner threatened to stop the fight but allowed him to finish the final two rounds.

Alexander felt Garcia bit off more than he could chew by fighting against a big welterweight like Spence.

“To Garcia’s credit, in the beginning he utilized things, he was confusing [Spence] a little bit with the jab and offsetting him with the movement, but ultimately Errol was just too big, too long, had too much firepower, he was just too big,” Alexander told BoxingScene.com.

“But I give Garcia credit though, he was still trying [to win]. He learned from [that loss] and there are weight classes for a reason. You have to respect all weight classes. He just has to go back to his weight. He’s small, he’s too small. I think at 140 he could be awesome.”

Alexander believes there are several fighters at 147 who can give Spence a tough fight, but he admits it won’t be easy to defeat the former United States Olympian.

“Anybody can be beaten on any given day. Keith Thurman can give him a run, Porter would give him a good fight. In my opinion, I think you have to be in shape to fight Errol for twelve rounds. You have to be ready to fight him for twelve rounds. If you’re in shape to box, to throw smart punches, you can beat Errol,” Alexander said.

“Right now, I would say [Spence is the best pound for pound], because he beat Mikey and Mikey was a beast. I think so.”
