Alberto “El Explosivo” Machado (21-0, 17 KOs) returned back home to Puerto Rico, after picking up a sensational win on Saturday night in New York City.

In his second defense of the World Boxing Association (WBA) “regular” super featherweight title, and his fourth bout with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach in his corner, Machado demolished Yuandale Evans (20-2, 14 KO’s) in a single round.

It didn’t take long for Machado to put Evans down – and then he dropped him two more times for good measure to secure the knockout win.

On his impressive Saturday performance over the Madison Square Garden ring, he said that the six-week camp he had with Freddie Roach in Los Angeles and the help of his handler, Juan de León, led him to identify the necessary adjustments for the fight.

“I arrived to be with my family and spend Christmas here, because last year we had problems. So this year’s celebrations will be doubled. The plan is to rest a week and then get back to work,” Machado told Joel Rivera.

“I felt much stronger and much more confident than in other occasions. I felt excited because I knew the preparation I was bringing and I was willing to give everything to win. But the hands came quickly. I was not expecting a knockout like that since I’m a fighter that can finish a fight at any time, and I ended up with this earlier than expected against a fighter who has many notable victories.

Although he said his future plans have been left in the hands of his managers and his promoter, Machado would like a showdown with a top Mexican boxer – and one name that really interests him is former world champion Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (25-1, 18 KO’s).

“Right now I’m not thinking of anyone. But if they gave me a choice, I would choose a fight that has meaning for my career. It could be a Mexico-Puerto Rico showdown,” Machado said.

“Right now I think it will be with Vargas, because we have been discussing that for a year and a half, but there is nothing finalized. I will leave that it in the hands of my promoter.”
