If there is one thing that sets Adam Wardzinski apart from his peers it is his copious use of the butterfly guard and a variety of butterfly sweeps. The butterfly guard rose to popularity in the 1980s in Brazil. It was brought to main stream attention in the early 2000’s when Marcelo Garcia demonstrated its masterful use. Today, Wardzinski carries on the power of the butterfly guard to the newest generation of BJJ students.

Have a look at this video from 5 Time World Champion Bernardo Faria. Wardzinski recently made a trip to see Faria at his BJJ Academy in New Bedford, Mass. While visting, Bernardo asked Wardzinski to show one of his butterfly sweep techniques. Check out the video below!
Here’s what Bernardo had to say about Adam Wardzinski’s butterfly sweep: “So guys this is a really cool sweep from the butterfly guard and it is very effective. There is a lot to pay attention to. For example, one of the things Adam does is get this 2 on 1 grip. Once he is able to establish the grip he puts the foot on the hip and drags. When he drags I have 2 choices. Either posture up to prevent the back take or get my back taken.
In this case, I posture up. Something that is very important to note is not only the belt grip but how tight Adam is able to stay to me. He is not going to be able to get this sweep if I can get my arm free. I will be able to under hook him and start to pass. So it is very important that he keeps my arm trapped.
Once Adam does all this and knows that my arm is now trapped, he is going to dive for an under hook on my leg. Similar to if he was going to go to deep half or X guard. Since Adam has all of his grips already set up he is not going to establish some new guard, he is just going to move his hip and get the sweep.”
