The second of AAA’s ‘big five’ events is here to liven up your day. Verano de Escándalo will take place on Sunday, June 16 from Merida, Yucatan.
The show will be available for free live streaming on Twitch definitely in Spanish and maybe in English. The start time is listed for 6 pm ET, but there could be a pre-show.
Let’s look at the matches with a breakdown of the stories and some predictions.
Dr. Wagner Jr. & Psycho Clown vs Blue Demon Jr. & Taurus
This bout is an extension of the feud between Dr. Wagner Jr. and Blue Demon Jr. The two have a date set for August 3 at Triplemania XXVII for hair vs mask. How has AAA keep this feud fresh for over six months, you ask? Well, they’ve already had a street fight, a cage match, and various trios bouts. Now, it is time for a good old-fashioned tag team match.
As for their partners, Psycho Clown is the number one crowd favorite. Into the main event he goes. Blue Demon Jr. has usually been backed up by Los Mercenarios or foreigners, such as Jeff Jarrett. The ranks of Los Mercenarios have been depleted with the free agent losses of Hijo del Fantasma and La Mascara. Texano and Rey Escorpion bolstered the group by adding La Hiedra and Taurus. That connection must be why Taurus is tagging with Blue Demon Jr. It is as best as I can figure.
Prediction: Blue Demon Jr. and Taurus take it. They have more luchadores in the back willing to interfere on their behalf.
Tag Team Championship: Young Bucks vs Lucha Bros
The feud between the Young Bucks and the Lucha Bros made its way to Mexico when the Young Bucks had a surprise appearance at Rey de Reyes to take the tag team gold away from Fenix and Pentagon. The Young Bucks won the championship rematch at AEW’s Double or Nothing.
This bout will be a testament to amazing recuperative powers. Pentagon ‘broke’ Matt Jackson’s arm at Double or Nothing, and Fenix lost facial flesh when taking off his mask after a fireball to the face by Contra Unit’s Josef Samael on a recent episode of MLW Fusion.
Keep an eye out for Konnan. He seems to be the representative for all foreigners that visit AAA. Konnan also has a storyline reason to be against the Lucha Bros after they turned down his request to join the faction MAD.
The Lucha Bros had some words for the Young Bucks.
Fenix said the best tag team in the world is coming to conquer those that stole their tag team titles. Pentagon added that Konnan can’t help the Young Bucks. What happened at Rey de Reyes and Double or Nothing can’t stay that way. They will obtain the tag titles.
I like their fire and intensity in that promo. The Lucha Bros look like they are coming to kill the Young Bucks. It pumps me up for the bout.
The Bucks replied that they are coming to kick ass. After beating them, they will take their masks.
I like the idea of that feud leading to a mask vs hair challenge either at an AEW show or a AAA show, perhaps at Madison Square Garden on September 15.
Prediction: Despite what Pentagon says, Konnan will assist the Young Bucks to a win. Konnan has too many tricks up his sleeve.
No Disqualification: La Parka, Myzteziz Jr., Hijo del Vikingo vs Texano, Rey Escorpion, La Hiedra
This bout is a carry over from the feud between La Parka and Hijo del Fantasma. Fantasma tombstone piledrove La Parka in front of La Parka’s son. La Parka has been eager to fight Los Mercenarios ever since. Fantasma left AAA, but Texano and Rey Escorpion are still around to heat the beef. The trios champs Myzteziz Jr., Hijo del Vikingo, and Laredo Kid are the ones who usually have La Parka’s back.
An interesting wrinkle is the addition of La Hiedra into the match. AAA is no stranger to intergender fighting, but this one feels a little different with the star power and no disqualification stipulation.
Prediction: Los Mercenarios will win after Texano whips his bull rope to rattle La Parka’s bones.
Pagano, Aerostar, Puma King vs Chessman, Monster Clown, Killer Kross (with Scarlett Bordeaux)
This trios bout seems to be a mix of personal one-on-one feuds. Aerostar and Monster Clown have been going at it ever since Aerostar declared his desire to prove himself in singles action. They’ve had a dog collar match, and Aerostar has also challenged Monster Clown to a mask vs mask match at a later date.
Killer Kross has been picking on Puma King lately, because Kross loves destruction. I’m not sure if Pagano and Chessman are in an official feud, but they have had enough encounters in trios action where something could have developed at a more recent show that hasn’t yet aired on the TV program, Conquista Total.
Prediction: Rudos for victory. I’m counting on Scarlett Bordeaux being the x-factor by Killer Kross’ side. The Killer Smokeshow will live up to that name.
Laredo Kid & Taya vs Daga & Tessa Blanchard
Taya has a long history with both Daga and Tessa Blanchard. Taya had a heated feud with Blanchard over the Knockouts championship in Impact. Taya and Daga were members of Los Perros del Mal. They had a reunion with Joe Lider in a trios bout at Rey de Reyes. Unfortunately, Daga turned his back on his team during the match. There is also a real life dating connection between Daga and Blanchard.
I’m not sure what Laredo Kid’s connection to the story is. He does have some beef with the rudos that occurred at a recent taping but hasn’t yet aired on TV.
Prediction: Laredo Kid and Taya will be victorious. That’s just a feeling. Taya is a fan favorite and Laredo Kid is a double champ (trios & cruiserweight).
Maximo & Mamba vs Sammy Guevara & Australian Suicide
Maximo and Mamba are two-thirds of the Fresas Salvajes with Pimpinela Escarlata. Sammy Guevara and Australian Suicide are two-thirds of a stable with Jack Evans called the Guardians of Lucha Libre.
Prediction: Maximo and Mamba run wild to give strawberries to Sammy Guevara and Australian Suicide.
Faby Apache vs Hijo del Tirantes
This feud has been brewing for a while. Faby Apache used to enjoy biased officiating from Hijo del Tirantes, because that’s what he does as a rudo referee. A few too many times, Faby accidentally hit Tirantes with dropkicks during matches. Tirantes began to think those attacks were personal, so he started screwing Faby in matches. That has led us to this intergender bout.
Prediction: Faby Apache kicks ass. She’ll defeat Hijo del Tirantes then move on to bigger things for Triplemania XXVII, perhaps being included into a pending Reina de Reinas title match between Lady Shani and Taya.
Keyra vs Lady Shani vs Chik Tormenta
Lady Shani’s Reina de Reinas championship does not appear to be on the line for this triple threat bout. Her opponents have been thorns in her side, as rudos are wont to do. I’m expecting this bout to be the most rugged of the evening. None of those ladies hold back.
Prediction: Keyra for the win. She has been talking tons of trash to Lady Shani, so this will be an opportunity for her to back it up, especially since no title is being defended.
The card for Verano de Escándalo looks solid from top to bottom. I don’t see any stinkers in the bunch. Faby Apahe vs Hijo del Tirantes probably won’t be a barn burner, but it has a funny story to hold it up. Every match should have at least a handful of cool moves or big spots.
I’m looking most forward to the mixed tag with Laredo Kid and Taya against Daga and Tessa Blanchard. I’ve yet to watch Blanchard perform. She has a darn good reputation and I know what the other three are capable of, so I could see this one stealing the show.
What are your predictions for Verano de Escándalo? Which match are you most eager to see? Which match do you think will steal the show?
